Tried & True Tutorial: Recycled T-Shirt Bracelet

I’ve found myself wanting to wear bracelets more and more lately. I saw a neat restyle project posted on the Sunshine & Carousels blog, which I thought was worth a shot. It transforms and old t-shirt into a cute cuff bracelet! The tutorial can be found here.

I had the perfect tank top to chop up for this project (it had ripped and was not worth repairing). When you cut jersey cotton into strips and stretch them out, it curls up into t-shirt “yarn”. I didn’t have the faintest idea how to make a six strand braid, so I used instructions found here.

I liked Erin’s addition of jewelry and charms into her cuff. I always have something hanging out in my “broken jewelry” drawer, so after I’d completed the woven braid, I stuck some pieces of silver chain through the braid in a random pattern. Using some jewelry findings in my stash, I attached a few silver toned beads and charms to the chain. I tried to give it a bit of a nautical look by using some starfish and shell charms.

Besides the braiding part (which was a bit of a challenge for me), I am happy with the turnout! I think this cuff would be a cute addition to a casual jeans and t-shirt outfit. Thanks for the restyle idea Erin!

Oh, and in case you’re curious, the nail polish I’m wearing is Essie’s Formal Affair. :)

  1. how did you connect the chain to the fabric? and did you make a clasp for the actual bracelet or just tie it together?

    • Hi Ashley – I didn’t have quite enough chain to make it the entire way around the bracelet, so I actually just used a needle and thread to secure the loose ends of the chain. I was able to hide that part under the fabric loop which holds the whole bracelet together. Hope that helps!
